August still feels like summer, but we all know how fast that changes. In a few short weeks the combines will be going, the dryer will be running around the clock, and every farm in the area will want propane on the same week.

Grain drying is the part of the propane year that catches people out. It's not a steady draw like home heating — it's a huge amount of fuel over a short stretch, and how much you need depends on weather nobody can predict yet.

Why Drying Demand Hits So Hard

Corn generally comes out of the field somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 to 25% moisture, and it needs to come down to around 15% to store safely — lower still if you're holding it long term.

Every one of those points has to be driven off with heat, and heat means propane. A common extension rule of thumb puts it near 0.02 gallons per bushel for each point of moisture removed. It sounds small until you run it across a full bin.

Work that math on your own acres and it becomes clear why a wet fall can double what you expected to burn — and why it does that for every operation in the region at once.

This is the part worth thinking hard about. When a wet fall arrives, it doesn't arrive for your farm alone — it arrives across the whole region at the same time.

Drying demand climbs everywhere at once, right as home heating season is getting underway. Those two demands stack on top of each other, and they stack on the same trucks and the same supply chain.

The farms that come through those years comfortably are almost always the ones that got their tanks filled before anyone knew what kind of fall it was going to be.

The Case for Filling in August

Propane has one property that makes early filling an easy call: it doesn't go bad. Unlike diesel or gasoline, it has an indefinite shelf life and won't degrade sitting in your tank. Gallons you take in August are exactly as good in October.

• Deliveries are far easier to schedule before the rush
• You're not competing with every other farm for the same window
• Full tanks when harvest starts means one less thing to track
• Nothing is lost by filling early — the fuel keeps indefinitely

Give the Dryer a Look Now

The worst time to discover a dryer problem is the morning you need to start drying. While there's still time to get a part ordered, it's worth going through it.

1. Clean screens and perforations — accumulated fines choke airflow
2. Inspect the burner and check for a clean, even flame
3. Look over hoses, regulators, and connections for wear or damage
4. Test controls, sensors, and safety shutoffs
5. Clear the area around the tank so a delivery truck has good access

A dryer running at proper airflow uses less fuel per point removed. Clean screens aren't just about avoiding breakdowns — they show up on the propane bill too.

Don't Forget the House While You're at It

It's easy to focus entirely on the dryer and forget that the furnace is about to start up too. Once the cold nights arrive, home heating demand lands right on top of everything else.
