Summer Fill-Up: The Best Time to Get Your Propane Squared Away

When it's warm out, propane is the last thing on your mind — and that's exactly why now is the time to think about it. Here's what every propane customer should know before the cold returns.

Tri-County Co-op  ·  July 2026

Out here in western Minnesota, we know winter is coming even in the middle of July. The heating season feels a long way off right now, and that's precisely what makes summer the easiest time to get ahead — no cold snap forcing your hand, no rush, no watching the gauge on a frozen morning.

At Tri-County Co-op, we'd rather help you plan now than scramble later. Here's what's worth knowing while things are still quiet.

Why Summer Is the Smart Season

Propane demand across the region is at its lowest in the summer, and that works in your favor. Deliveries are easier to schedule when the trucks aren't chasing the first freeze, and you get to pick a time that suits you instead of taking whatever's left.

Here's the part a lot of folks don't realize: propane doesn't go stale. Unlike gasoline or diesel, it has an indefinite shelf life and won't degrade sitting in your tank. Fuel you buy in July is exactly as good in January — so there's no downside to filling early.

💡 Beat the Fall Rush

Folks who wait until the first cold snap face a busier season and less flexibility. Call 320-324-7151 to get on the schedule while things are quiet.

The 80% Rule — and What Your Gauge Is Really Telling You

If you've ever watched a delivery and wondered why the driver stopped before the tank read full, there's a good reason for it. Propane tanks are filled to about 80% of capacity, never to the brim.

That empty top fifth isn't wasted space — it's room for the liquid to expand. Propane expands as it warms, and on a hot afternoon it needs somewhere to go. The 80% rule is what keeps pressure in a safe range when the temperature climbs.

It also explains your gauge. That dial shows a percentage of capacity, not gallons. A 500-gallon tank reading 40% is holding roughly 200 gallons — and a "full" tank reads 80%, not 100%.

  • Tanks fill to about 80% to leave room for expansion
  • Your gauge shows a percentage, not a gallon count
  • A properly filled tank reads around 80%
  • Summer heat can nudge the reading up slightly — that's normal

Worth knowing before you decide you've been shorted. If your gauge ever reads in a way that doesn't add up, give us a call and we'll help you make sense of it.

Why You Really Don't Want to Run Out

Running a propane tank down to empty is more than an inconvenience, and this is the single best argument for filling before you think you need to.

When a tank runs dry, every pilot light in the house goes out. Before service can safely be turned back on, the system typically has to be checked for leaks by a qualified technician — that's standard practice in the propane industry, not an upsell. It means a scheduled visit rather than a quick top-off.

There's a second problem that's easier to miss. An empty tank left open can let air and moisture work their way into the system, and moisture inside a steel tank is how rust starts. Keeping some fuel in the tank keeps that from becoming your problem.

  1. Pilot lights go out and appliances shut down
  2. A leak check is usually required before service resumes
  3. Air and moisture can get into the system
  4. It always seems to happen on the coldest night of the year

The simple fix: don't let the gauge get low. Most folks aim to call well before they hit the bottom quarter of the tank.

How Much Will You Actually Need?

Every home burns through propane a little differently. Square footage matters, but so does what you're actually running on propane — furnace, water heater, range, dryer, and shop heat all add up.

A few things worth thinking through before you call:

  • What you heat with, and what else runs on propane
  • How last winter went — did you come up short or finish comfortably?
  • Anything that's changed: a new appliance, a finished basement, a heated shop
  • How closely you want to watch the gauge yourself

If you're not sure where to land, that's genuinely fine — it's the kind of thing we talk through with neighbors all the time. Tell us about your home and last season, and we'll help you think it through.

A Good Time for a Once-Over

While the weather is cooperating, it's worth walking out and giving your tank a quick look. Keep grass and brush trimmed back, make sure nothing is stacked against it, and check that the area stays clear for a delivery truck.

If you spot rust, dents, or anything that looks off, let us know while there's no urgency — a summer afternoon is a much better time to sort it out than the week of the first hard freeze.

Ask About Your Options for the Season

Late summer is also the right time to talk about how you'd like to handle the season ahead — both when your propane arrives and how you'd prefer to handle the cost.

Options and any enrollment windows can change from year to year, so the honest answer is that a quick phone call beats anything we could print here. Give us a ring and we'll tell you exactly where things stand for the coming season and what makes sense for your household.

📋 One Call Sorts It Out

Tell us about your home and how last winter went. We'll walk you through what's available this season and get your fill on the schedule.

Safety guide

Stay safe with propane

Propane has an added odorant (ethyl mercaptan) — it smells like rotten eggs or a skunk. Listen for hissing near appliances or the tank. Look for dead or discolored vegetation near buried lines. Frost on the outside of your tank can also indicate a problem.

Put out all flames immediately. Do NOT touch any electrical switches. Leave the building and leave the door open. Turn off the main valve on your tank if safe to do so. Call us and 911 from outside or a neighbor’s phone. Do not re-enter until cleared by emergency responders.

Never let your tank drop below 20% in winter. Keep snow and ice clear from tank vents, regulators, and lines. Do not use a heat gun or open flame to thaw frozen regulators — call us instead. Note: propane contracts in extreme cold, so your gauge may read lower than expected.

When a tank empties fully, air and moisture enter the lines. All appliances must be inspected and re-lit by a certified technician before use — this is a safety code requirement, not optional. Call us immediately at (320) 555-0197. We’ll deliver and send a technician for the re-light.

Have all propane appliances inspected by a licensed technician every year. Check that burner flames are steady blue — not orange or yellow. Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home. Never attempt DIY repairs on gas lines or appliances.
