Refill or Exchange? Propane Cylinders for Grilling Season

Grill tank running low? There's a real difference in what you get for your money — plus a few things stamped on that cylinder worth knowing how to read.

Tri-County Co-op  ·  June 2026

Nothing brings the neighborhood together like a summer cookout — right up until the grill sputters out halfway through a batch of burgers. When that cylinder runs dry you've got two choices: refill the tank you have, or swap it for a different one.

Both get you grilling again. But there's a difference in what you get for your money, and it's bigger than most folks realize.

The 15-Pound Surprise

Here's the thing that catches people out. A standard grill cylinder is a 20-pound tank — that's what it's built to hold. But most exchange cages fill their cylinders to around 15 pounds.

You're handing over an empty 20-pound tank and walking away with 15 pounds of propane. That's a quarter less fuel than the tank could hold, and the price on the cage rarely reflects the difference.

When you refill instead, you pay for the propane that actually goes into your tank.

  • You pay for the gas you actually receive
  • You keep your own cylinder instead of trading it away
  • A well-cared-for tank doesn't get swapped for a beat-up one
  • No guessing how full the one in the cage actually is

The trade-off is convenience: a refill means bringing the tank in and waiting a few minutes. For most folks the better value is worth the quick stop.

When Exchange Makes Sense

Exchange has a real place, and it's not just convenience. If your cylinder is old, rusty, or out of certification, trading it in is the easiest way to get back to a tank that's safe and ready to use.

That's the honest rule of thumb: refill a good tank, exchange a bad one.

How to Read Your Cylinder

There's useful information stamped right on the collar of your tank — the metal ring around the valve. Once you know what you're looking at, it takes about ten seconds.

  1. Manufacture date — stamped as a month and year, like 06-14
  2. TW — tare weight, what the cylinder weighs empty
  3. WC — water capacity, used to calculate the correct fill

That date is the one that matters. Grill cylinders generally need to be requalified about twelve years after the manufacture date, and periodically after that. If yours is stamped well over a decade ago, that's why a filling station may turn it away.

Between that date and a quick look for rust, dents, or gouges, you can usually tell before you leave the house whether your tank is worth filling or ready to be traded in.

The OPD Valve — Why Some Tanks Get Turned Away

If someone has ever declined to fill your cylinder and you weren't sure why, this is often the reason.

Since 2002, small propane cylinders have been required to have an Overfill Prevention Device — a valve that stops the flow once the tank reaches a safe level. It's easy to spot: OPD valves have a distinctive triangular handwheel, while the older ones are round or star-shaped.

A cylinder without an OPD valve can't be legally refilled, no matter how good the tank looks. If you've got an old one in the garage with a round handwheel, that's one to retire rather than haul in.

Hauling and Storing Cylinders Safely

Propane is safe to handle when you follow a few basic rules, and they're worth a reminder at the start of grilling season.

  • Transport cylinders upright and secured so they can't tip or roll
  • Crack a window — don't haul them in a sealed trunk
  • Take them straight home; don't leave one in a hot car all afternoon
  • Store outdoors, upright, out of direct sun — never in a basement or garage

That last one is the rule people break most often. Propane vapor is heavier than air, so any leak indoors settles at floor level rather than dissipating — which is exactly what makes an enclosed space the wrong place to keep one.

More Than Just Grill Tanks

Cylinders do a lot more around here than fire up the grill — patio heaters, camp stoves, construction heaters, forklifts, and plenty of other jobs run on the common sizes.

Give us a call and we'll let you know what we can take care of for you.

Safety guide

Stay safe with propane

Propane has an added odorant (ethyl mercaptan) — it smells like rotten eggs or a skunk. Listen for hissing near appliances or the tank. Look for dead or discolored vegetation near buried lines. Frost on the outside of your tank can also indicate a problem.

Put out all flames immediately. Do NOT touch any electrical switches. Leave the building and leave the door open. Turn off the main valve on your tank if safe to do so. Call us and 911 from outside or a neighbor’s phone. Do not re-enter until cleared by emergency responders.

Never let your tank drop below 20% in winter. Keep snow and ice clear from tank vents, regulators, and lines. Do not use a heat gun or open flame to thaw frozen regulators — call us instead. Note: propane contracts in extreme cold, so your gauge may read lower than expected.

When a tank empties fully, air and moisture enter the lines. All appliances must be inspected and re-lit by a certified technician before use — this is a safety code requirement, not optional. Call us immediately at (320) 555-0197. We’ll deliver and send a technician for the re-light.

Have all propane appliances inspected by a licensed technician every year. Check that burner flames are steady blue — not orange or yellow. Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home. Never attempt DIY repairs on gas lines or appliances.

Call when your tank gauge hits 20–30%. In winter, deliveries can take 2–3 business days, so don’t wait until it’s below 10%. Automatic delivery customers don’t need to monitor this — we handle it.

It depends on your original installation. Leased tanks are tied to a specific supplier. Owned tanks can be filled by any provider, including us. Check your installation paperwork, or call us at (320) 555-0197 — we’ll help you find out.

Yes, if you own your tank outright. We cannot fill tanks leased from another provider as those remain their property. Call ahead to confirm before scheduling your first delivery with us.

Residential deliveries typically have a 100-gallon minimum. For smaller tanks or unusual situations, call us — especially for first-time customers or emergency fills where we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

We use your usage history and weather data to estimate when you’ll need propane and schedule delivery proactively. You’ll receive a notification before we arrive. No calls or monitoring required on your end.
